Server-based vs Network-based Virtualization Security Appliance (VSA): There are two types of virtualization security appliance (VSA) solutions available for VMWare virtualization infrastructure. As shown in the figure above, the server-based firewall is a virtual appliance running on the server as a VM which leverages VMWare VMSafe API; the network-based firewall is running external to the server however it leverages the traffic monitoring and firewalling using the internal vSwitch decision engine which runs in the hypervisor.
